Food Technology, Product Design and Textiles in Key Stage 3 at Beckfoot

At Beckfoot, students will study Product Design, Food Technology and Textiles on rotation throughout Key Stage 3. They can then go on to study Hospitality and Catering or Engineering at GCSE, and Product Design at A Level.

Enrichment

There are a multitude of enrichment opportunities presented to students in DT, these include:

  • Internal competitions designing dishes for local cafes and festivals
  • Links to products and companies around us discussed in lessons

Assessment

Formative and summative assessment will take place throughout KS3 to monitor student progress, inform further teaching and learning, and address any misconceptions.

Year 7

Food Technology: The Healthy Breakfast Project 

Cooking recipes like fruit salad, beans/cheese on toast, rock buns, oaty bites, eggy bread, quesadillas, breakfast muffins and scotch pancakes to build core skills in the kitchen and understand factors of health and nutrition.

Design Technology: Gadget Stand 

Students will create a moodboard, graphically design a 2D model of their proposal and make their model with specialist tools, techniques, processes and equipment.

Textiles: Pencil case 

Using a design brief to create a design that can be replicated on the CAD/embroidery machine, gaining skills such as tack stitching, setting up a sewing machine, pinning, tacking, hemming, inserting a zip and attaching pieces of fabric.

Year 8

Food technology: Healthy Multicultural Festival Food 

Expanding on skills learnt in Y7 as they create their own recipe from scratch and create it. This will be done by making pizza, pasta salad, Bolognese, fajitas, savoury rice and pitta bread.

Design Technology: Container box 

Pupils will design and make their own container box, beginning with creating their own 2D model and then utilising a range of fabrication models to bring their design to life and identify ways to improve it.

Textiles: Selfie art

Students will research the work of existing artists and recreate their own pieces as they expand on their skills such as using a heat press, using CAD, weaving and embroidery.

Year 9

Food Technology: Power of Food 

Equipping students with the knowledge to make food choices in the future and adapting recipes to their own needs and others. Recipes/projects will include: making healthier versions of Big Macs, KFC, Cheesecake, Taco Bowls, Curry and Spring Rolls.

Design Technology: Electronics – 3D Jigsaw and steady hand game 

Using creativity and imagination, pupils are to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems.

Textiles: Graffiti 

Students will be expected to demonstrate good presentation techniques, use of displaying work and suitable font titles. Students develop application of colour and tone through designing a product based on the patterns and textures created.
